A 30-year-old man is in critical condition after a tragic incident on Wednesday night at a Publix supermarket.

It is located at Walden Woods Shopping Plaza, at 2202 James L. Redman Parkway.

The Plant City Police Department received a call just after 6:30 pm, alerting them to a disturbance inside the store.

According to preliminary police reports, the man set himself on fire inside the store, shocking both employees and customers present.

The quick reaction of several people at the scene was crucial, according to WFLA.

They rushed to help the man, using fire extinguishers and other improvised means to try to extinguish the flames while waiting for the Plant City Fire Department to arrive.

The immediate response of the firefighters and emergency services was vital.

By the time they got there, the man had already been aided by passersby, who managed to contain the flames enough to prevent an even more tragic outcome.

Emergency teams proceeded to stabilize the man and immediately transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition.
